Jharkhand: Woman lynched in Chatra over ‘illicit relationship’

Chatra, July 4: A woman was mercilessly beaten to death by the residents of Masuriatari village in Barauni panchayat on June 30. Her paramour, who too was beaten black and blue is struggling for life.

The village panchayat covered up the incident and ordered four men responsible for this bizarre act to pay Rs 3 lakh to the kin of victim Sugiya Devi, wife of Fuldev Ganjhu. But the video of the beating went viral and police came into action arresting seven so far.

Sources said Sugiya was having an illicit relationship with a man Ghopin Ganjhu who was a relative of her husband. On the night of June 30, he went to meet Sugiya but was caught by villagers in a compromising situation.

A panchayat was called where both were roughed up. Due to a merciless beating, Sugiya died. The panchayat members and villagers asked four namely Kamla Ganjhu, Anil Ganjhu, Baudha Ganjhu and Bhola Ganjhu to pay Rs 3lakh to the woman’s family so that her minor daughter can be taken care of and married from the amount.

Chatra SP Rakesh Ranjan asked his team to arrest the culprit after which seven have been nabbed so far.
