Baramulla, April 22: Four terrorists have been neutralised so far in the ongoing encounter that erupted in the Malwah area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district early Thursday, including a top Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) leader.

LeT commander Yousuf Kantroo, who was on the top ten most wanted terrorists list, was killed in the operation.

A special Budgam Police squad, along with the Army, began a joint cordon and search operation in the Malwah area in response to a particular tip. During the search operation, as the joint search group approached the probable location, the concealed terrorists opened fire on them indiscriminately, injuring four troops, including one officer. According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, the firing was efficiently responded, resulting in an encounter.

Later, the operation was joined by Baramulla Police, led by SSP Baramulla. In the incident, one policeman from the Baramulla area was hurt and was later taken to the Army’s base hospital in Srinagar.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department, terrorist Yousuf Kantroo previously worked for the Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) as an overground worker before being apprehended in 2005. He was later released in 2008, but in 2017 he rejoined the terrorist ranks and began murdering innocent citizens, police officers, and political activists. He afterwards shifted from the HM to the LeT terror organisation.

The identity of the other terrorist murdered, on the other hand, has yet to be determined. Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of the encounter. The operation is still underway. Further details awaited.
