Bengaluru, Feb 8: The Karnataka High Court has began hearing applications from students who want to wear hijab to college and school.
“We shall go by reason, by law, not by passion or emotions,” Justice Krishna Dixit said at the outset of the hearing. We’ll follow the Constitution’s instructions.”
“For me, the Constitution is the Bhagavad Gita.” I took an oath to uphold the Constitution,” he added, adding that he has been inundated with WhatsApp messages on the subject and that kids protesting are not something he sees on a regular basis.
The judge noted that the Karnataka government had previously taken a position on the headscarf, in response to counsel Kamat’s request for leniency in allowing pupils to wear the same colour scarves.
In response to advocate Kamat asking for generosity to allow students to wear the same colour scarves, the judge observed that the Karnataka government has already taken a stand on the headscarf. “If the state is unwilling to budge, we have nowhere to go,” he added.
Advocate General tells Karnataka High Court that autonomy is given to colleges to decide uniforms; says students who want relaxation shall approach the College Development Committee.
