Ranchi: In a major development, the Jharkhand government has taken concrete steps to launch kidney transplant services at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), the state’s largest government hospital. The move is expected to significantly reduce the need for patients to seek kidney treatment outside Jharkhand.

Statewide Rollout in Phases

The plan also includes extending kidney transplant facilities to other government hospitals in a phased manner. A letter issued by Deputy Secretary Dhruv Prasad from the Department of Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare confirms that an important advisory committee meeting will be held on January 9, 2026, at 11:30 AM.

Registration and Licensing to Be Discussed

The meeting, chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh, will take place in his office. Discussions will center on granting registration and licenses to two hospitals in Ranchi—RIMS and Raj Hospital—for conducting kidney transplants. The committee will assess existing infrastructure and capabilities before making decisions.

Pre-Licensing Technical Review

According to standard procedure, a technical committee led by the Director-in-Chief of Health Services must first inspect the hospital premises. This includes a thorough evaluation of infrastructure, availability of nephrologists and urologists, operating theatres, ICUs, blood banks, and other necessary medical facilities. A detailed report is submitted following this inspection.

Final Decision Based on Evaluation

Based on the technical committee’s report, the advisory committee determines whether the hospital meets all required standards and eligibility criteria. If approved, the final decision and licensing are issued under the supervision of the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department.

Boost to State Healthcare

The health department emphasized that introducing kidney transplant services at RIMS would strengthen the state’s healthcare system. This will ensure timely and advanced treatment for patients within Jharkhand and mark a significant step toward expanding the state’s tertiary medical care.
