Kolkata: In a shocking development in the rape and murder case of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, police revealed that the accused, a civic volunteer, went home and slept for several hours after allegedly committing the crime. He later attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes, but investigators discovered blood stains on his shoe.

The accused, who was not professionally linked to the hospital but frequently visited the premises, is now in custody. The crime took place between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on Friday when the victim, a post-graduate trainee doctor, had gone to a seminar hall to rest after her meal. Her body was discovered in the hall later that morning.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the hospital on Sunday for the second time in three days to meet with representatives of agitating junior doctors. “After committing the crime, the accused returned to his residence and slept until late Friday morning. Upon waking, he washed the clothes he wore during the crime in an attempt to destroy evidence. However, his shoes, which still had blood stains, were found during a search,” an officer said, according to PTI.

The initial autopsy report indicated that the victim’s body showed signs of severe trauma, with bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, as well as injuries to her leg, neck, hand, and lips. The police are also investigating the possibility that the doctor was murdered before being raped, based on circumstantial evidence.

The police have handed over the autopsy report to the victim’s parents. Commissioner Goyal noted that a productive meeting was held with the hospital’s students, and their demands are being addressed, including the removal of an assistant police officer who was stationed at the hospital.

In response to the incident, hospital authorities have terminated the contracts of two security personnel employed in the emergency ward for failing to perform their duties.
