Suncheon, April 8: With contrasting victories on Friday, leading Indian shuttlers P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth advanced to the semifinals of the Korea Open Super 500 badminton competition.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, won her 17th match in the women’s singles quarterfinals, defeating Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-10 21-16.
Next, she’ll face either Saena Kawakami of Japan or second-seeded Korean An Seyoung.
In a men’s singles quarterfinal match that lasted just over an hour, Srikanth, a World Championships silver medalist, used his power and finesse to confound local hope Son Wan Ho 21-12 18-21 21-12.
Srikanth has a 4-7 record versus the Korean, including three losses to him.
On Friday, though, the Indian played better badminton than her opponent, who is returning to international badminton after a two-year layoff. The fifth-seeded Indian will face the winner of the match between Thailand’s eighth-seeded Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Indonesia’s third-seeded Jonatan Christie.
