Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Akhilesh Yadav detained by police in Lucknow

Many opposition leaders were house arrested

The effect of the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday has started being seen in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

Akhilesh Yadav sat on a dharna on the road after being stopped from going to Lakhimpur. Akhilesh said that the BJP government is committing more atrocities on farmers than the British rule. He also demanded the resignation of the Union Minister of State for Home and also a financial assistance of Rs 2 crore each to the farmers. After this, the police took him into custody.

At some distance from Akhilesh’s dharna, a mob has set a police jeep on fire. The police have placed many opposition leaders under house arrest for preventing them from reaching Lakhimpur Kheri. These include BSP general secretary Satish Mishra, Congress leaders Pramod Tiwari, Salman Khurshid, Aradhana Mishra and Shivpal Yadav. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has been detained by the police in the morning itself.

In the Lakhimpur violence case, 14 people including Ashish Mishra, son of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni, have been charged for murder, criminal conspiracy and rioting. This case has been registered at Tikunia police station on the complaint of Jagjit Singh, a resident of Nanpara in Bahraich.

Notably, At least eight people were killed as violence erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday during a farmers’ protest over the three farm laws. At the same time, the body of a journalist was also recovered on Monday morning. With this, the death toll has gone up to 9 so far.
