Beijing: A devastating landslide triggered by heavy rains in Central China has resulted in the death of 11 people and left 6 others injured. The incident occurred in Yuelin Village, located in the city of Hengyang in Hunan Province, early Sunday morning.
According to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua, the landslide struck at around 8 am (local time), washing away parts of a residential house in the village. By 10:30 am, rescue teams had located 12 individuals, but unfortunately, 11 were confirmed dead and one person remains missing.
The injured victims were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Rescue efforts are currently ongoing, with over 240 emergency and rescue personnel dispatched to the affected area.
The heavy rains and subsequent landslide also caused significant flooding in the region. The authorities reported that a one-story guesthouse collapsed due to the disaster, and it was initially believed that around 18 people were buried under the debris.
China has been experiencing a summer of extreme weather conditions, including frequent flash floods in the northern and southwestern regions. Earlier this month, these flash floods claimed the lives of at least 20 people. In May, heavy rains caused a highway collapse in Southern China, resulting in the death of 48 individuals.
Local authorities have noted that the rescue work is continuing urgently, with teams working around the clock to locate any remaining survivors and provide aid to those affected.
