Riga, Feb 28: The parliament of Latvia decided overwhelmingly on Monday to allow its citizens to fight in Ukraine if they so desire, according to a statement from the Parliament.
“Our citizens who want to support Ukraine and volunteer to serve there to defend Ukraine’s independence and our common security must be able to do so,” said Juris Rancanis, chairman of the parliamentary defence, home affairs and corruption prevention commission, which drafted the law.
Notably, Moscow once governed Latvia, along with Baltic neighbours Estonia and Lithuania. The three countries have always viewed Russia as a threat, but unlike Ukraine, they have joined the European Union and NATO, which provide security assurances.
