Mumbai, Feb 25: Tennis player Leander Paes committed multiple acts of domestic abuse against his former partner Rhea Pillai, according to an order issued by a Mumbai metropolitan magistrate court.
In 2014, model Rhea Pillai filed a domestic violence complaint against Leander Paes. If Rhea Pillai chooses to leave their shared residence, the court ordered Leander Paes to pay 50,000 in monthly rent and 1 lakh in monthly maintenance to her.
The order was issued by Metropolitan magistrate Komalsing Rajput earlier this month and made public on Wednesday.
Rhea Pillai had gone to court in 2014, requesting relief and protection under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, claiming that she had been in a live-in relationship, comparable to marriage, with Leander Paes for several years.
She alleged that Leander Paes “inflicted verbal, emotional, and economic abuse, resulting in great emotional violence and anguish” as a result of his actions and conduct.
“It is proven that the respondent caused multiple acts of domestic violence,” the magistrate wrote in her order.
The court ordered Leander Paes to pay Rhea Pillai a monthly rent of 50,000 rupees, as well as a monthly maintenance of 1 lakh rupees, but added that if she chooses to continue residing in their shared property (in Bandra), she will not be entitled to monetary relief.
The magistrate stated that ordering Leander Paes to live in a rented property while still paying maintenance to Rhea Pillai would cause ‘serious prejudice’ because his tennis career is ‘nearly ended.’
