New Delhi, March 9: The stakeholders of cricket, Marylebone Cricket Club, have passed significant law changes in the game of cricket in their 2022 code. The modifications have been announced, but they will not go into effect until October. Several proposals had been made, but the revisions were agreed last week with the goal of upholding the game of cricket.
MCC has today announced its new code of Laws for 2022, which will come into force from 1 October.

One of the most significant changes is that saliva will no longer be used on the ball. The law was initially enacted in response to a pandemic, but after further consideration, it was made permanent in order to minimise any grey areas and reduce ball-tampering. Crossing while the catch is being taken has been prohibited, and every time a batsman is dismissed, a new batsman takes strike. The rule was tested in The Hundred before being accepted by the MCC on a global scale.
And the Mankad, one of the most contentious techniques of dismissal in cricket, has been renamed “run out” to prevent any negative connotations about what is a legitimate play.
The act of a bowler stopping to run out a batsman creeping out of his crease, referred to in the game’s laws as “running out the nonstriker,” has long been debated as to whether it is in the spirit of the game.
The minor modification, on the other hand, should assist to eliminate any argument as an official manner of dismissal.
“Since the publication of the 2017 Code of the Laws of Cricket, the game has changed in numerous ways. The 2nd edition of that Code, published in 2019, was mostly clarification and minor amendments, but the 2022 Code makes some rather bigger changes, from the way we talk about cricket to the way it’s played,” said Fraser Stewart, MCC Laws Manager.
Many improvements to dead ball law have also been made in the latest edition of Cricket’s Law, the most notable of which is the call of the dead ball. A dead ball occurs when a player, animal, or object on the playing field causes injury to one of the teams. External interference can range from a pitch invader to a dog running on the field; if this occurs and has a physical impact on the game, the umpires will call and signal the dead ball.
