Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday sharply criticized political parties for what she termed “cheap politics” in the wake of the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor within a Kolkata hospital. Banerjee accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of exploiting the tragedy for political gain, drawing parallels to the political turmoil in Bangladesh.

“Instead of standing with the victim’s family, CPI(M) and BJP are indulging in cheap politics. They think they can do a Bangladesh here. But let me tell you, I am not greedy for power,” Banerjee said, firmly rejecting accusations of mishandling the case.

Defending her government’s actions, Mamata Banerjee emphasized her immediate and hands-on involvement in the case. “What have we not done? What action did we not take? As soon as I came to know of the incident, I spoke to the police commissioner and spoke to the parents of the woman,” Banerjee stated, underscoring her commitment to ensuring justice.

The Chief Minister also assured the victim’s family that the perpetrator would face the harshest punishment. “I told the parents that the rapist would be hanged, and I stick to it,” she declared.

Banerjee revealed that she had been closely monitoring the case throughout the night and maintained contact with law enforcement until the victim’s cremation was completed. “I was in touch with cops till the cremation was done. Cops escorted her family, and police arrested the killer in 12 hours,” she noted, highlighting the swift response by the authorities.

As the political battle intensifies in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s firm stance against the opposition’s tactics and her vow to deliver justice reflect the ongoing struggle to maintain law and order in the state while navigating the turbulent waters of political rivalry.
