Arambagh, Oct.2: Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, said on Saturday that she will push Jharkhand to draft a flood-mitigation strategy in cooperation with her government. Banerjee said she will ask the Centre to draft a master plan to prevent floods while speaking at a flood relief camp in Arambagh, Hooghly district.
“This is a man-made flood. Jharkhand will be asked to draft a plan in cooperation with us. We’ll ask the Centre to put together a master plan to prevent future floods. Bengal would not have been in this condition if the dams in Jharkhand had been dredged,” she remarked.
Following an aerial examination of a few flood-affected districts, Banerjee stated that the state’s flood was caused by the PSU DVC’s discharge of more than 5 lakh cusec water without telling the West Bengal government over the previous two days.
Due to excessive water flow by DVC following rains in Jharkhand, the situation in sections of East and West Midnapore, Bankura, Hooghly, Birbhum, Howrah, and East and West Burdwan was dire, according to Banerjee.
“The floods have affected four lakh people in the state and the state government is assisting them. Hope the water will recede quickly,” she added.
According to Banerjee, fifty rescue and relief teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were working in the affected districts.
