Jamshedpur, April 15: A 36-year-old man Govind Hembram committed suicide by hanging after hacking his elderly step-mother to death in the Ghatsila sub-division about 50 km away from Jamshedpur on Saturday morning.
The ghastly incident has taken place at Leda village under Banki panchayat in the tribal-dominated Ghatsila sub-division of the district.
According to police, the assailant Govind Hembram attacked his stepmother Gula Hembram while she was preparing to cook rice at the house.
The elderly woman was killed instantly leading the other family members to rush to inform the village mukhiya (village head) about the shocking incident. But as the anxious family members returned home along with the mukhiya, they found the assailant Govind Hembram hanging from a wooden beam at the house. The assailant had used his ‘dhoti’ to commit suicide.
Soon information about the sensational incident spread like a wildfire, leading the sub-divisional police officer, Ghatsila, Kuldeep Toppo and Ghatsila thana OC, Bimal Kindo to reach the crime scene for inspection.
The police recovered the blood-stained chopper that he used in the elderly woman’s murder and also the ‘dhoti’ he used to hang himself during the investigation.
The police shifted both bodies to the Ghatsila sub-divisional hospital for post-mortem, but could not say anything about the reason that led Govind Hembram to kill his stepmother before killing himself.
