Guwahati, June 30: A major landslide that occurred at a railroad construction camp in Manipur’s Noney district resulted in at least seven fatalities and 13 injuries. Some of them are critical and several people still missing.
Around Wednesday night, the landslide occurred close to the Tupul yard railway construction site, which is located close to the Makhuam area and roughly 14 km to the northeast of Noney police station.
“So far we’ve recovered seven bodies and rescued 13 injured persons. The critically injured ones will be referred,” a senior state official monitoring the search and rescue operations said.
Since there are still about 23 individuals missing and searches are still being conducted, the death toll is sure to rise.
An advisory notice from the deputy commissioner of Noney district claimed that the Ijai river, which flows through Tamenglong and Noney districts, has been blocked by the debris, creating a dam-like storage condition that, if ruptured, will cause devastation to the low-lying sections of Noney district.
The Manipur CM was assured of all the assistance from the Center in a conversation with PM Narendra Modi and federal home minister Amit Shah.
“Spoke to Manipur CM Shri N Biren SinghJi and reviewed the situation due to a tragic landslide. Assured all possible support from the Centre. I pray for the safety of all those affected. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon”, PM Modi tweeted.
