New Delhi: Days after the Supreme Court upheld the CBI’s clean chit to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the coal block allocation case, Congress Parliamentary Party chief Sonia Gandhi published an article in the Indian Express on Tuesday comparing Manmohan Singh’s record with the Modi government’s functioning and launching a sharp attack on PM Modi.

Sonia’s Key Allegations

Sonia Gandhi wrote that a planned and systematic campaign was run against Manmohan Singh involving elements from the bureaucracy, media, judiciary, RSS, and BJP, and that this false campaign has now reached its natural end. She said Dr Manmohan Singh has been vindicated on every count and that history will remember him as one of the most effective Prime Ministers. She described July 29, 2026 as an important day in political history, when the Supreme Court upheld the CBI’s closure report and also reprimanded the lower court that had rejected it and made remarks against Manmohan Singh without any solid basis.

Attack on Modi Government

Sonia alleged that the Modi government has clearly misused agencies like the ED and CBI against opposition leaders, silencing them or cleverly absorbing them into the BJP. She wrote that leaders are considered corrupt while in the opposition but suddenly become clean after joining BJP. She added that PM Modi, who is currently pardoning students who protested against him, could use this opportunity to also apologise for the humiliating defamation campaign against Manmohan Singh.
