New Delhi, Nov.1: Justice U U Lalit of the Supreme Court has expressed that the marginalised elements of society require legal protection.
According to Justice Lalit, who is also the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority, the state legal services authority is obligated to provide legal aid to the weaker sectors of the population, including women and children.
He was addressing at the Kerala State Legal Services Authority’s Legal Awareness Camp and Expo for the vulnerable sectors of society, which was held at the Vellar Craft village in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav.
“Even though many programmes are conducted by the Union and state governments for giving legal aid to the marginalised sections of the community, the results do not reach the beneficiaries as they are not aware of the existence of the schemes,” said Justice Lalit.
According to him, the legal services authority has a responsibility to set up facilities to ensure that legal aid activities reach qualified persons through legal services institutions.
“The service of the legal services institutions shall reach every nook and corner of the state. Constitution provides free legal aid to each and every eligible citizen. Hence there should be programmes for making the beneficiaries capacitated enough to avail the benefits by providing awareness,” he said.
Justice Lalit launched a massive legal services camp in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, on Sunday, and flagged off five mobile vans that will drive across the southern state to raise awareness about the legal services accessible to citizens.
