Oslo: The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday announced Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado as the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. She has been honoured for her courageous and peaceful struggle to restore democracy in Venezuela under the authoritarian regime of President Nicolás Maduro.
Recognition For Democratic Leadership In Venezuela
Maria Corina Machado is known for championing democratic rights and leading movements against Maduro’s authoritarian rule. The Nobel Committee highlighted that despite facing severe personal threats, Machado chose to remain in Venezuela and continue her fight. Her selection, the committee said, will serve as an inspiration to millions. Praising her bravery, the committee stated, “When authoritarian forces seize power, it is crucial to recognise the courageous defenders of freedom who stand up against tyranny.”
Committee Emphasises Importance Of Protecting Freedom
The Nobel Committee underscored that democracy depends on individuals who refuse to stay silent and have the courage to act despite serious risks. “They remind us that freedom should never be taken for granted,” the statement read.
Trump’s Hopes Dashed After Speculation
The announcement also ended weeks of speculation about former US President Donald Trump being in the running for the prize. Trump had recently expressed confidence in his chances of winning, but the Nobel Committee’s decision put those rumours to rest.
