Lucknow: In a significant political development, Samajwadi Party leader Mata Prasad Pandey has been appointed as the Leader of Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. This appointment comes after the party chief, Akhilesh Yadav, was elected to the Lok Sabha in the recently held general elections.
Mata Prasad Pandey, an experienced politician and seven-time MLA, represents the Itwa constituency in Uttar Pradesh’s Siddharthnagar district. The 81-year-old veteran has previously served as the Speaker of the Assembly for two terms, showcasing his extensive experience and leadership capabilities.
The appointment of Pandey marks a strategic move by the Samajwadi Party to ensure strong opposition leadership in the state assembly. With his vast political experience, Pandey is expected to effectively lead the opposition and hold the government accountable.
Additionally, the Samajwadi Party has named former state minister and Kanth MLA Kamal Akhtar as the chief whip of the party in the Assembly. Rakesh Kumar Verma, the MLA from Raniganj, has been appointed as the deputy whip. These appointments aim to strengthen the party’s presence and coordination within the legislative assembly.
The position of Leader of Opposition became vacant after Akhilesh Yadav, the incumbent, was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Kannauj parliamentary constituency. With Pandey’s appointment, the Samajwadi Party aims to continue its robust opposition to the ruling party’s policies and actions in the state.
