Amravati: Chaos erupted during a campaign rally led by BJP leader and former MP Navneet Rana in Khallar village, Maharashtra, on Friday night as a mob disrupted the event, throwing chairs and raising threatening slogans. The police have registered a case and urged citizens to avoid rumors as forces maintain control in the area.
Rally Disrupted by Violence
Visuals from the rally showed Navneet Rana surrounded by her supporters as chairs were thrown at her by a group of people. In one instance, Ms. Rana is seen approaching the mob, urging them to leave, but is met with hostility. Her security personnel acted swiftly to shield her.
Following the attack, Ms. Rana filed a police complaint, demanding immediate arrests. “During my speech, some individuals began making lewd gestures and shouting slogans, including ‘Allahu Akbar.’ When party supporters objected, they started throwing chairs,” Ms. Rana told the media.
She further alleged that she was verbally abused and even spat on, though her security personnel protected her from harm. Several BJP functionaries accompanying her sustained injuries during the altercation.
Police Action and Investigation
Amravati Rural Crime Branch Inspector Kiran Wankhade confirmed that a dispute broke out during Ms. Rana’s campaign for BJP candidate Ramesh Bundile, ahead of the November 20 state polls.
“A case has been registered based on Navneet Rana’s complaint. The situation is now under control, and additional police checkpoints have been established in the village,” said Wankhade, urging the public not to believe in rumors.
Navneet Rana’s Political Background
A former actor, Navneet Rana represented the Amravati Lok Sabha seat as an Independent MP from 2019 to 2024 before joining the BJP earlier this year. She is married to Ravi Rana, an MLA from Maharashtra’s Badnera constituency.
Ms. Rana is no stranger to controversy, previously making headlines for her announcement to recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in 2022, which led to her arrest. She has also drawn criticism for her remarks during political rallies, including comments targeting AIMIM leader Akbaruddin Owaisi.
