Mumbai: A WhatsApp message warning of massive blasts has put Mumbai on high alert just a day before the culmination of the Ganesh festival. The threatening note, received on the traffic police control room’s helpline, claimed that “human bombs” had been planted in 34 vehicles and that 400 kg of RDX could “kill 1 crore people”.
Details of the Threat
The sender, identifying himself as part of “Lashkar-e-Jihadi,” alleged that 14 Pakistani terrorists had infiltrated India. The message suggested coordinated explosions would “shake the entire city” during Anant Chaturthi, which marks the final day of Ganesh idol immersions.
Police and Security Response
Mumbai Police immediately tightened security across the city and informed the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). Senior officers assured the public that every possible preventive step is being taken. “From parking areas to basements, all locations are being checked thoroughly. Our security forces can handle any threat,” a police officer said at a press briefing.
Public Advisory
Authorities urged citizens to remain calm, avoid spreading rumours, and cooperate with security checks. Given that lakhs of devotees are expected on the streets tomorrow, the police had already rolled out a heavy security grid, now intensified following the threat.
Festival Security Context
The Ganesh festival is Mumbai’s biggest public celebration, with massive processions converging at beaches and rivers for immersion rituals. The timing of the threat, coinciding with the finale of the 10-day festival, has prompted a city-wide alert.
