Ranchi, Aug.16: The National Human Right Commission (NHRC) has directed the Jharkhand government to pay Rs 2.5 lakh as compensation to each of the six victims of Dhenga police firing.
The direction was given after the NHRC chairperson Justice Arun Mishra, who started his three-day Jharkhand visit today with other members of the NHRC, heard the matter related to human rights violation in the state at the Judicial Academy in Dhurva. The matter was brought to the attention of the commission by one of the victims Mantu Soni.
Soni and advocate Abhishek Krishna Gupta represented the victims’ kin while home secretary Rajiv Arun Ekka, Akhilesh Jha, CID SP Karthik S were representing the state during the hearing.
Those present during the hearing included Dhenga and Chirudih shooting victims Zubeida Khatoon, Santosh Ram, Sanjay Ram, Shrichand Ram, Sunny Deval Kumar besides their advocates Anirudh Kumar and Ilyas Ansari.
Earlier on behalf of the state government, home secretary Ekka told the NHRC that the matter is being probed by the CID.
On 14 August 2015, during the Kisan Adhikar Maharally in Dhenga, there was a clash between the villagers and the police. During this, there was firing from the police. Six people sustained bullet injuries in the incident.
The injured were admitted to Hazaribagh Sadar Hospital after first aid at Barkagaon Primary Health Centre. After this, the Sadar Hospital management informed the police while entering the police case. After this, the Hazaribagh police took the statement of the injured.
The injured said that the police deliberately opened fire on them. An FIR was registered in this connection on the statement of the then SDO Anuj Prasad against as many as 67 people, including the injured at the Barkagaon police station. It is being alleged that the police opened 22 rounds of fire from the INSAS rifle.
