New Delhi: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday announced the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 India Rankings, highlighting the continued dominance of engineering institutions, particularly the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). For the sixth consecutive year, IIT Madras has retained its position as the top engineering college in India.
The 2024 rankings feature eight IITs in the top 10 engineering colleges, with the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchirappalli being the only non-IIT to make the list. IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay secured the second and third positions, respectively, maintaining their strong standing in the engineering category.
In the “overall” category, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru ranks second, just behind IIT Bombay. However, IIT Delhi has slipped to fourth place this year, down from third in the previous rankings.
The NIRF 2024 rankings also cover other specialized fields. In Architecture and Planning, IIT Roorkee holds the top spot, followed by IIT Kharagpur and NIT Calicut. The rankings offer insights into the best institutions across multiple categories, including Universities, Research Institutions, Degree Colleges, and specific disciplines like Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Medical, Dental, and Agriculture.
This year, new categories have been introduced, including Open Universities, State Public Universities, and Skill Universities, reflecting the growing diversity of higher education in India.
The NIRF rankings evaluate institutions based on five broad criteria: Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcome (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (O&I), and Perception (PR). Participation in these rankings has seen significant growth, with 10,845 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) participating in 2024, up from 3,565 in 2016.
