Ranchi, June 9: Villagers in Jharkhand’s Gumla district beat up and set two youths accused of raping a female on fire, leaving one dead and the other critically injured, police said on Thursday.

The incident occurred at Basua village under Sadar police station in Gumla on Wednesday night.

The injured is undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) Ranchi.

“The duo had allegedly raped the minor on Wednesday. When the girl’s family members and other villagers came to know about the incident, they got hold of the accused from a neighbouring village, of which they were residents. The mob then brought the youths to the survivor’s village, thrashed them, and set them on fire,” said Gumla Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Manish Chandra Lal, according to PTI.

According to him, one of the accused died in the hospital from his injuries, while the other’s condition is critical. The accused’s motorcycle was set on fire as well.

The girl’s family filed a police report with the Sadar Police Station, and the survivor will be sent to the hospital for a medical evaluation, according to the officer. He added that a police squad had been dispatched to the area to preserve law and order.
