Islamabad, Aug 14: Anwarul Haq Kakar was sworn in as Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister on Monday to lead a partisan political setup to govern the cash-strapped nation and hold the upcoming general elections.
Kakar, a 52-year-old Senator who is serving for the first time, hails from the Balochistan province and belongs to the Pushtun ethnic group. He is affiliated with the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), a political entity that holds a strong connection with the influential authorities within the country.
At a ceremony conducted at the Aiwan-i-Sadr (the President’s House) in Islamabad, President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office to him. He was elected as Pakistan’s eighth interim Prime Minister.
Before his swearing-in ceremony, Kakar stepped down from his position in the upper house of Parliament.
On Saturday, Raja Riaz Ahmad, the leader of the opposition in the dissolved National Assembly, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reached an agreement on Kakar’s name after their final day of discussions.
