Daltonganj, Jan 25: Palamu police on Wednesday arrested nine criminals on the charges of demanding extortion worth Rs two crore from a Rehla-based jeweller Rajan Kumar Soni.

Notably, five of the nine arrested are from UP and Chhattisgarh

Giving details, Palamu SP Chandan Kumar Sinha said that the gang was making repeated calls for extortion worth Rs two crore from the jeweller over the last three days since January 17.

Moreover, The gang had even shot two rounds in the air close to the shop of Soni on January 19.

Apart from the extortion call, this gang had looted four common service points since June 2022, three such robberies in just around a month and had this gang not been busted it would have unleashed terror of robbery and extortion.

The gang of nine has its prime man Anand Kumar Dubey, 33, from UP who has criminal cases in UP and Chhatisgarh.

The UP and Chhatisgarh belonging criminals over a period of time tapped the local criminals of Palamu and were planning to run a crime syndicate here, said Chandan Kumar Sinha.

These criminals used to burn their clothes soon after the crime if their images were recorded by the CCTV cameras, added the SP.

The gang never used cell phones for intra-communication among themselves.

The SP said the gang used a new phone number for making extortion calls to the jeweller only to dodge the police but human and technical inputs aborted their plan.

Sub-divisional police officer Surjit Kumar and his team of over a dozen police officials sustained track that led to the busting of the gang conceded the SP.
