Ranchi, Aug.10: The Panchayati Raj department today extended the tenure of three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions till fresh elections are held. The panchayat elections are due in the State since December 7, 2020.
The extension was given in the wake of the corona pandemic. Earlier, the extension was given on January 7, 2021 for six months. The extension period ended on July 7 and when the election could not be conducted due to the corona pandemic further extension was given from today.
The three tiers of Panchayati Raj institutions include Gram Panchayat, Panchayat Samiti, and District Board.
A notification to this effect was issued in the evening by the department.
A villager welcomed the development. “When the extension period ended on July 7 the three-tier system became defunct and taking decisions in developmental work in villages had become difficult. This had caused hindrance in developmental work. Now it will become easier to make a decision,” the villager said.
A rural job worker said the development has paved the path of payment of his remuneration. “After the power of the Gram Panchayat Working Committee was seized, the Mukhiya stopped signing bills for payment and my payment got held up. Now my payment will be released,” the worker said.
