New Delhi: In a significant statement during his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly advocated for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across India, arguing that laws which divide the nation have no place in a modern society.
Speaking from the iconic Red Fort, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the UCC is not only a directive from the Supreme Court but also a vision of the Constitution’s framers. “The Supreme Court has repeatedly held discussions on the Uniform Civil Code and issued orders because a large section of the country feels, and rightly so, that the current civil code is communal and discriminatory,” PM Modi stated.
He highlighted that the current civil code divides the country along religious lines, which he believes should not exist in a contemporary society. “There must be widespread discussions, everyone should come forward with their opinions, and laws that divide the country on religious lines must be done away with. They have no place in a modern society. Time demands a secular civil code. And then we will be free of religious discrimination,” he added.
The push for a Uniform Civil Code has long been a part of the BJP’s agenda, and several BJP-led state governments have already begun steps toward its implementation. In the party’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP declared the UCC as being in the nation’s interest, reflecting a broader strategy to address this contentious issue on a national level.
PM Modi’s remarks come just two months into his third term, indicating a clear intent by the government to take decisive action on this matter during its current tenure. The Prime Minister’s call for a secular civil code aligns with his broader vision for a unified and modern India, free from religious discrimination.
