PM Modi Expected to Visit Ukraine Following Russia Trip: Reports

Potential Visit Around Ukrainian National Day Amidst Global Peace Efforts

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Kyiv around August 24, coinciding with Ukraine’s National Day, in what would be his first visit to the country since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

Diplomatic sources cited by PTI report that Modi’s visit will include a meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky amid ongoing global efforts to achieve peace in the region. Significant logistical preparations are anticipated for this high-profile visit. However, no official announcements have been made by either India or Ukraine.

This potential visit follows Modi’s informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 8. During this two-day visit to Russia, Modi was hosted for dinner at Putin’s dacha in Novo-Ogaryovo, an honor extended to select visiting leaders. Following their meeting, Modi expressed his gratitude to Putin via a post on X (formerly Twitter), while Putin praised Modi for his contributions to India’s progress.

Modi and Zelensky last met on June 14 at the G7 Summit in Italy’s Apulia. According to a readout from the external affairs ministry, the leaders had a “productive meeting” where they discussed strengthening bilateral ties and exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. Modi reiterated India’s commitment to encouraging a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, stating that New Delhi will continue to support peaceful solutions.

Previously, the two leaders also met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Japan last year.

Modi’s potential visit to Ukraine signifies India’s continued engagement in fostering global peace and stability amidst the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
