Jind: Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen train in Jind, Haryana, on Friday, making India the fifth country in the world to operate hydrogen-powered trains, with the service set to run on the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route at fares ranging between Rs 5 and Rs 26.
Zero-Emission Train Uses Fuel Cell Technology
The zero-emission train uses fuel cell technology, generating electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, releasing only water vapour and making it entirely environmentally friendly. Capable of running at speeds up to 75 km per hour, the train features a gallery-style seating arrangement with three seats on either side of the coach and has a total capacity of 2,600 passengers. Notably, it is built on indigenous technology, having been fully designed and manufactured within India.
PM Lays Foundation for Development Projects Worth Rs 15,000 Crore
After flagging off the train, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for various development projects worth more than Rs 15,000 crore in the region. Addressing a public gathering on the occasion, Modi remarked that while Jind’s famous ghevar hasn’t changed over the years, life in the region certainly has, adding that Jind is emerging as a model of good governance under the BJP-NDA government, with Haryana having embarked on a new path of development in recent years. He said the day’s event was giving fresh momentum to the double-engine government’s development mission, noting that this was the location from which the country received its first hydrogen train. He also recalled that India’s first train had run between Bombay and Thane, adding that Jind would now be remembered whenever hydrogen trains are discussed in the future.
PM to Visit Chandigarh, Jalandhar and Kurukshetra
Following the Jind event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Chandigarh, where he will lay the foundation stone for development projects worth more than Rs 6,600 crore. During his visit to Jalandhar in Punjab, Modi will inaugurate rail and road infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,470 crore, while in Kurukshetra, he will dedicate a railway elevated track built at a cost of Rs 447 crore to the public.
