ABUJA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be conferred with Nigeria’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). This prestigious recognition, previously awarded to Queen Elizabeth II in 1969, highlights Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with India.

Warm Welcome for PM Modi

Upon his arrival in Abuja on Sunday as part of a three-nation tour, PM Modi was greeted by Nigeria’s Minister for the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike. Wike presented him with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja, symbolizing Nigeria’s trust and respect for India.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

PM Modi’s visit focuses on enhancing the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, which has seen significant growth since 2007. Both nations share robust collaborations in energy, defence, and economic development.

During the visit, PM Modi is expected to hold discussions with Nigerian leaders to explore new avenues of cooperation and deepen existing ties.

First Visit in 17 Years

This marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Nigeria in 17 years, underlining the importance of bilateral relations.

India has a substantial economic presence in Nigeria, with over 200 Indian companies investing more than $27 billion in the country. PM Modi’s visit aims to reinforce these economic ties and explore mutual opportunities for growth.
