RAJ KUMAR

Ranchi, May 30: Mahua Maji, whom the JMM has selected as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha election, is a multi-talented woman.

Apart from being a social worker who has worked as chairperson of the State Commission for Women, she has also done many literary works.

Her novel ‘Main Borishailla’ has been included in the bestseller list. She has received many awards in the country and abroad for this novel. Her stories have been published in many newspapers and magazines along with Hans, Kathadesh, Vagarth, Kathakram, and Naya Gyanodaya.

Born on December 10, 1964, Maji has done MA and PhD. After doing her early studies in Ranchi, she got a degree from Media College, Pune.

Apart from ‘Main Borishailla’, many of her stories like ‘Mouni Ki Mukti’,  ‘Jharkhandi Baba’,  ‘Muktioddha’, ‘Card Ka Ghar’, ‘Role Model’, ‘Draft’, ‘Sapne Kabhi Nahi Marna’, ‘Jungle Zameen Aur Sitare’ are popular and widely read.

Maji’s novel ‘Main Borishilla’ focuses on the liberation saga of Bangladesh. This novel became very popular in a very short time.

Explaining the unusual title of this novel, she says in the foreword to the novel – “…just as the people of Bihar are called Biharis and the people of India as Indians, so the people of Barisal are called regional people here. The language is called Borishilla. The main character of the novel is Keshto, Barisal. That’s why she can say – I am Borishilla.”

In this novel, the historical facts of Bangladesh from 1948 to 1971, the incidents of atrocities on Bangladeshi people by the Pakistani government and the struggle tales of the liberation army have been put into the narrative thread.

Maji was earlier given the opportunity to contest the assembly election in 2014 and 2019 from the Ranchi assembly constituency. Her husband Subdodh Maji has a long association with JMM chief Shibu Soren.
