Ranchi, May 25: President Droupadi Murmu today gave a special compliment to girls during her convocation address at Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Namkum.
She asked all those attending the second convocation of the institute to give a big hand for the girl observing that they won eight of the 10 gold medals and one among them was given the best student award. She also observed that the best performer came from among the girls despite their number being less than boys. The President said that she was happy when she noticed three girls coming twice to receive medals and shields and one girl coming thrice to receive a medal and shield.
Presenting the achievement of girls in IIIT as an example, the first lady missed no opportunity to give a call to parents to encourage their daughters to pursue their education in IIIT.
President Murmu asked the management to pay proper attention to innovations and promote startups by establishing incubation centres in the institute in accordance with New Education Policy 2020.
The first lady, during her address, expressed her pleasure over vegetable and fruit vendors carrying out their business by digital transaction and asked if the exercises which were not thought of before 2016 are being practiced successfully. While mentioning this, the president talked about using IT for social justice.
Talking about the growing importance of IT in India, she said the IT sector which had contributed only 2 percent to the Indian economy in 1998 is now contributing 9 percent and giving jobs to many. He said it is the result of IT that India is third in the world for having 1 lakh registered startups. With the help of IT, women sitting at their homes are becoming businesswomen, she said
The President, on the occasion, asked the students to think about the society while thinking about their career and suggested that they work on their core competency. She asked to use artificial intelligence to save resources and labour to ensure that use of energy for more important work.
Those present on the occasion included Governor C.P Radhakrishnan, chief minister Hemant Soren and chairman of IIIT Arun Jain besides others. As many as 109 students got their degree.
