New Delhi, June 14: The Congress is expected to attend a meeting of opposition parties organised by Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday at the Constitution Club in Delhi to discuss the approaching presidential election.
Congress MPs Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, and Randeep Singh Surjewala are expected to attend the meeting, according to sources.
Several Opposition parties, notably Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Left-wing parties, are expected to attend the meeting and push the discussion on the common candidate ahead. The election of India’s President is set for July 18.
Banerjee, who is also the chief minister of West Bengal, has arrived in New Delhi for the meeting. She sent a letter to 22 opposition leaders and chief ministers from non-BJP states last week, inviting them to a meeting to develop a joint strategy for the 2018 presidential elections.
She claims that the presidential election provides the ideal opportunity for all progressive parties to get together and discuss the future of Indian politics in the face of ‘divisive forces.’
Meanwhile, prominent NCP leaders have stated that their party’s leader, Sharad Pawar, is not interested in running for President, despite rumours that other Opposition parties are endorsing his candidacy for the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
