New Delhi: Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra made a striking debut in the Lok Sabha on Friday, delivering a powerful maiden speech that earned applause from her party and a candid admission from her brother, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Rahul, who began his parliamentary journey in 2004, praised Priyanka’s address, stating, “It was a wonderful speech—better than my maiden speech, let’s put it like that.”
Priyanka, representing Wayanad, captivated the House with her remarks on national unity, women’s empowerment, and protecting India’s constitutional values.
“The Constitution Is Our Suraksha Kavach”
In her speech during the discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption, Priyanka referred to the Constitution as India’s “Suraksha Kavach” (protective shield) and accused the ruling government of eroding it over the past decade.
She also paid homage to the martyrs of the 2001 Parliament attack, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding constitutional principles.
Criticism on Caste Census and Reservation
Priyanka lambasted the government for evading the demand for a caste census. “When it comes to the crucial demand for a caste census, they trivialise the issue by diverting conversations,” she said, adding that such measures are essential to address social inequities.
She further criticized the BJP-led NDA government for weakening reservations by promoting privatization and lateral entries in government services.
Call for Electoral Transparency
Raising concerns about the electoral process, Priyanka advocated for a return to ballot-based elections. “Hold elections through ballots, and the truth will be revealed,” she said, hinting at the need for more transparency.
Voice for Marginalized Communities
Sharing stories from Sambhal, Priyanka highlighted the unfulfilled aspirations of violence victims who dreamt of a better future through education. “Their dreams remain unfulfilled,” she said, underlining the struggles of marginalized communities.
A Promising Start
Priyanka’s confident and combative debut in Parliament established her as a formidable voice in the Opposition. Her speech underscored the Congress party’s commitment to social justice, constitutional integrity, and inclusivity.
