New Delhi: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi appeared before the MP-MLA Court in Sultanpur in connection with a defamation case linked to his alleged remarks about Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Gandhi told the court that all allegations against him are politically motivated.

Case Linked to 2018 Karnataka Election Remark

The case stems from a statement reportedly made by Rahul Gandhi during the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. He had allegedly said that a party claiming to uphold honesty had a president who was an accused in a murder case, referring to Amit Shah. Following this, Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of a district cooperative bank and a BJP leader, filed a defamation complaint against Gandhi in the MP-MLA Court.

Final Opportunity to Record Statement

Rahul Gandhi appeared in court to record his statement after being granted a final opportunity by the court on February 20. According to reports, the court has now fixed March 9 as the next date for clarification. His counsel, Kashi Prasad Shukla, said Gandhi was present in court for about half an hour. The complainant’s lawyer, Santosh Pandey, was also present during the hearing.

Previous Absences and Court Warning

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had appeared before the court on July 26, 2024, but did not attend several subsequent hearings. On January 19 this year, after his absence, the court directed him to appear personally on February 20 as a final chance.

Reports indicate that Rahul Gandhi arrived at Amausi Airport by chartered plane and then travelled to Sultanpur via the Purvanchal Expressway.
