New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Monday pressed for a discussion in Lok Sabha over alleged irregularities in voter lists, an issue that has raised serious concerns across multiple states. Addressing Zero Hour, the Congress leader highlighted how opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the accuracy and transparency of electoral rolls.
“The entire opposition has been raising this issue persistently. While we acknowledge that the government does not directly compile voter lists, a discussion on its credibility is essential,” Gandhi said.
He pointed out that irregularities in electoral rolls have surfaced in Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Haryana, with opposition leaders flagging instances of duplicate entries and inflated voter counts.
Trinamool Congress Raises Alarm Over Voter Roll Errors
Supporting the demand for a probe, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy cited concerns raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who alleged that identical EPIC (Electoral Photo Identity Card) numbers were found in multiple constituencies, including Murshidabad and Burdwan in West Bengal, as well as in Haryana.
“A delegation from Trinamool Congress will soon meet the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to submit a formal complaint,” Roy informed Parliament.
With assembly elections scheduled next year in West Bengal and Assam, he stressed the urgent need for a thorough revision of the voter rolls to ensure free and fair elections.
Opposition Demands Transparency in Electoral Process
The opposition has accused authorities of failing to maintain accurate and error-free voter lists, citing past instances where bogus voters and duplicate entries have influenced elections. They argue that such discrepancies could impact electoral integrity in upcoming state elections.
“There are serious flaws in the voter lists, and similar issues have already been flagged in Maharashtra and Haryana. Now, they are trying to manipulate voter records in West Bengal and Assam,” Roy added.
Election Commission Urged to Respond
Opposition parties have called for the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take immediate action and rectify the discrepancies.
“The ECI must take responsibility for these errors and ensure complete transparency,” Roy demanded. “The people of India deserve a fair electoral process, and such irregularities must be thoroughly investigated.”
With political pressure mounting, the demand for a parliamentary discussion on voter list irregularities is expected to intensify in the coming days.
