New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has strongly criticized the handling of the rape and murder case of a young doctor in Kolkata, drawing attention to the “local administration” in West Bengal, where the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is in power. His comments come a day after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s cautious response to the case that has sparked outrage across the nation.
Rahul Gandhi took to social media, condemning the horrific crime and questioning the actions of the authorities involved. “The attempt to save the accused instead of providing justice to the victim raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration,” his post read, expressing deep concern over the incident.
He further highlighted the insecurity this incident has generated, not only among women but also within the medical community. Drawing parallels to the infamous Nirbhaya case, he stated, “This incident forces us to rethink how we ensure the safety of our daughters. If doctors are unsafe in medical colleges, how can parents feel secure sending their daughters out to study?”
Gandhi’s criticism comes at a time when pressure is mounting on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s government to act decisively. The tragic incident occurred at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where the victim, a 41-year-old postgraduate doctor, was found murdered on Friday morning.
The primary suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was arrested after CCTV footage revealed his presence in the building where the doctor’s body was discovered. Reports suggest that Roy admitted to the crime during interrogation.
The case has triggered widespread outrage, with women, traditionally strong supporters of Banerjee, planning a midnight march to protest the incident. The march is reportedly being supported by some members of the TMC, adding further pressure on the state government.
Rahul Gandhi’s comments are likely to intensify the scrutiny on the TMC, as public anger grows over the state’s handling of the case. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation, amid concerns of potential lapses by the local authorities.
