Ramgarh, Dec 10: An elderly couple Jeera Mahto (65) and his wife (60), residents of Koiri Tola of town, died of suffocation after they slept by burning a coal stove in their room at night due to cold.

When the couple’s room did not open till late on Saturday morning, other family members knocked on the door to wake them up. They eventually had to break open the room’s door and on entering, the couple was found dead. The room was filled with gas and smoke due to the burnt coal.

Jeera Mahto and his wife used to sell bamboo baskets and soups in the market. On Saturdays, a weekly ‘Shanichara market’ is held in Ramgarh’s Bazar Tand. The family said they went to wake the couple up so that they don’t miss the market but instead found them dead.  So far the death case has not been reported to the Ramgarh police.
