Ranchi, March 28: Labourers on their way to the HEC plant to earn their bread defying a two-day nationwide bandh call by trade unions were thrashed. Many sustained injuries in the incident and were admitted to a local hospital for treatment.

A locality resident informed this by sharing the video in which the labourers are shown undergoing treatment and alleging two trade union leaders, Bhawan Singh and Laldev Singh and their followers Harendra Yadav and Ramchandra Singh for the same.

Those injured included Satyanarayan Baraik, Sanjay Kumar, Ashok Vardhan Azad, Rauf Ansari and Prakash Kacchap.

Officer-in-charge of Dhurwa police station Pravin Kumar confirmed the incident saying an FIR has been registered in the matter and an investigation has been started.

“The injured labourers had an association with HEC Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) and Hatia Mazdoor Lok Manch, which are not supporting the strike and thus they were attacked,” a police official investigating the case said.

Bhuwan Singh, who is the President of Hatia Mazdoor Union, denied the allegation.

“The incident is fall out of ego clash between labourers trying to enforce bandh while those wanted to defy bandh. Though the agitating workers suggested they adopt another route to go for duty to respect the sentiment as a labourer, they take it as a matter of prestige and knocked a labourer with the bike and also used unparliamentary words for them,” Singh said expressing his concern over the incident.
