Ranchi, Oct.29: Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on the occasion of World Stroke Day today started a landmark treatment option for blockage or ischemic stroke patients called “Thrombolysis” (a clot dissolving treatment) through its department of neurology.
RIMS Director Dr Kameshwar Prasad, who is also a renowned stroke specialist and neurologist, inaugurated the Thrombolysis facility.
If stroke patients are being brought within three hours of the onset of the symptoms for stroke then this treatment has proven to be highly successful in preventing death and long-term disability.
World Stroke Day is observed on October 29 every year to spread awareness about the seriousness of this devastating brain condition, its symptoms and prevention measures.
Stroke often referred to as brain stroke or ‘lakwa’ in Hindi, is the second most common cause of death after a heart attack and the major cause of long-term disability worldwide.
Stoke is mainly of two types, one form is blockage type (ischemic stroke) that comprises 70 percent of stroke cases and the other is leakage type (haemorrhage stroke) that comprises 30 percent of stroke cases.
It is estimated that 15 to 16 lakh new cases of stroke occur every year in India. One-third of them die, one-third recover and one-third remain disabled.
Despite the huge mortality and morbidity associated with this devastating condition of the brain, if the patient can be treated within a few hours (less than 4.5 hrs) after the onset of symptoms, death and disability can be prevented.
