Ranchi, Nov 30: Patients at the neurosurgery department of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) are facing the brunt due to the lack of sufficient beds in the wards.
According to the HOD of the Neurosurgery department Dr Chandra Bhushan Sahay, there are just 120 beds in the wards of neurosurgery whereas the number of patients is 255.
“This has been a persistent problem for us for quite some time now and this is probably the first thing I would like to discuss with the health minister when we meet for a meeting in a few days,” the HOD said during a conversation with this correspondent.
Manish Bhagat, an attendant from Argora whose sister is admitted for the last four days said that it becomes very difficult to sleep in the corridor at night as the temperature has gone down a lot in the last few days.
“The corridor is open and there is nothing to block the cold winds at night. Some of us have tried to cover the railings with plastic sheets but it is of no use. There are patients who have just undergone surgery and are sleeping in the corridor. It is such a risky situation for them,” Bhagat said.
He added that despite a few beds which are available in the wards are given to certain patients who apply for source.
Md Imran, another attendant of a patient who has undergone surgery said that due to lack of place, medications such as drips and other injections are given to the patients in the corridor itself. He added that the condition is really terrible in the department as far as hygiene is concerned.
Medical Superintendent of RIMS Dr Hiren Birua said that in order to deal with this problem, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been provided to the HOD wherein it has been mentioned that patients who can be treated should be admitted and others must be referred to some other hospital.
“This is such a problem which cannot be resolved overnight. To deal with this, we even reserved some beds for neuro patients in the Eye department’s ward but even that is full now. For the long run, a 500-bed ward will be set up in the new super speciality building for patients of Neurology and Neurosurgery,” the medical superintendent said.
