Ranchi, March 8: Ever since the arrival of Dr Vineet Mahajan at the Cardio-thoracic vascular surgery department of the RIMS, the department has continued to amaze with the rare and difficult open-heart surgeries which are only possible in the top-notch hospitals of the country.
34-year-old Rinki Devi of Palamu district, whose two major valves of the heart were destroyed, got a fresh lease of life after the successful open-heart surgery at RIMS.
HOD Dr Vineet Mahajan said that the patient was suffering from Rheumatic heart disease where the heart valves get permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The two major valves of the heart namely the mitral and aortic valves were destroyed and the patient’s health was critical.
“Her open heart surgery was performed which lasted for three hours and the heart was stopped for one and a half hour where her mitral and aortic valve were replaced with the mechanical one,” Dr Mahajan said.
“The patient has been extubated (taken out of mechanical ventilation) and doing well now and will be discharged soon,” Dr Mahajan added.
Rinki’s brother Shambhu Kumar Gupta said that she had breathing problems after which they decided to take her to RIMS for treatment.
“The operation was done by the doctors of RIMS under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme and my sister is safe now,” Gupta said.
The surgery was performed by Dr Vineet Mahajan (Surgeon) with the support of Dr Anshul Kumar (Surgeon), Dr Shio Priye (Anaesthesiologist), Dr Khushboo & Mr Amit.
The CTVS department was started in 2012 but many doctors who had joined the department left the institute due to infrastructural shortcomings. In 2017, Dr Rakesh Choudhary and Dr Anshul Kumar joined as a faculty after which operation theatre was commissioned in October 2018 which opened the doors for vascular surgeries in the department. However, the first open-heart surgery was conducted in February 2019 when doctors of CTVS along with the assistance of two experts from PGI Chandigarh conducted the first open-heart surgery.
