Patna, Dec 19: On the final day of the winter session, chaos broke out once more in the Bihar Assembly when BJP members stirred up trouble over the tragedy involving the Saran hooch and connected a senior party official to the Lakhisarai liquor bust.
Within 30 minutes of the hearing’s beginning at 11 am on Monday, Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary postponed it till 2 pm because opposition leader Vijay Kumar Sinha’s attempt to calm heated emotions by making a speech on the House floor fell flat.
Sinha was given permission to read out an adjournment motion put up by his party, which demanded recompense for the victims of the hooch catastrophe, whose number, according to Sinha, was in the hundreds.
Only 30 deaths have been confirmed by the administration thus far, despite the fact that most unsubstantiated reports put the figure at or even beyond 50.
In order to press the demand for ex-gratia to the victims in Saran, which has been firmly rejected by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Sinha referenced a provision in the prohibition law as well as the example of a hooch catastrophe in Gopalganj where compensation was awarded despite the state having gone dry.
On the House floor, he also expressed sympathy for people who had passed away after taking fake alcohol in Saran.
