Jamshedpur, June 7: Family members and sympathisers of a 58-year-old male patient created a ruckus at the Meditrina hospital in Adityapur on Tuesday after the man succumbed to heart ailment, allegedly due to a delay in treatment.
The patient in question, Ganesh Modak, had been brought to the hospital from Sini in a serious condition at about 11 in the night but his treatment began effectively from 1.30 am on Tuesday due to a delay in making the deposit.
Half an hour off the partial deposit of the money, the patient was declared dead.
The deceased’s son Kailash Modak said that soon after his father was rushed to the hospital from their house in Sini, located about 25 km away, the hospital administration asked to deposit Rs 2.25 lakhs, claiming that the patient had a massive heart attack and needed angioplasty surgery.
“We had Rs 50,000 with us at that moment. We made repeated requests to start the surgery immediately saying that we will deposit the remaining amount within hours. We also made several of my friends to talk to the official posted in the Accounts section pledging the commitment to pay the remaining amount out of Rs 2.25. But the hospital administration did not listen to our request. Finally, they agreed to start the treatment at about 2.30 am, but it was too late. After 30 minutes, a doctor informed me that my father is no more,” narrated the bereaved Kailash Modak.
Others who accompanied Kailash said that they would lodge a complaint with the Seraikela-Kharsawan Deputy Commissioner, claiming that if Ganesh Modak had been provided timely treatment then his life could have been saved.
Over 40 people who turned up at the Meditrina hospital in the morning today staged a demonstration in front of the hospital’s administrative office to protest the alleged medical negligence.
A senior administrative official of the Meditrina hospital, Rakesh Kumar said it is the protocol of every hospital to give an estimate of the required for a patient’s treatment as per the nature of the ailment.
“At the time of admission of the patient, the hospital management must have given the estimate of treatment as he needed angioplasty surgery. But as the patient’s condition was deteriorating fast, he was shifted to the ICU and soon after shifted to ventilator where he died,” said the senior official of the hospital.
Rakesh, however, escaped replying if the treatment of Ganesh Modak began belatedly on the issue of making a deposit, claiming that he was not at the hospital in the night.
