New Delhi, April 26: The Supreme Court on Tuesday accepted to hear arguments against a Karnataka High Court decision upholding the ‘hijab ban’ at educational institutions.

Meenakshi Arora, a senior advocate, noted in Supreme Court appeals against a Karnataka High Court ruling upholding the hijab ban in educational institutions on Tuesday.

NV Ramana, the Chief Justice of India, requested her to wait two days and stated he will list it soon. Several petitioners have appealed to the Supreme Court, challenging the Karnataka High Court’s decision maintaining the Karnataka government’s order requiring strict adherence to uniform standards in schools and institutions.

Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice Krishna S Dixit, and Justice JM Khazi of the Karnataka High Court ruled that the requirement of uniforms is a reasonable restriction that students cannot object to, and dismissed various petitions challenging the ban on hijab in educational institutions as frivolous.

The hijab controversy began in January of this year, when six students wearing the hijab were purportedly banned from entering the Government PU College in Udupi. On February 10, the Karnataka High Court issued an interim order that students should not wear any religious attire to classes till the court issued the final order.
