New Delhi, July 21: Maninder Singh, a senior attorney and former additional solicitor general, was chosen by the Supreme Court on Thursday to serve as amicus curiae in the matter involving the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The former Amicus Curiae PS Narasimha is no longer available, according to a bench presided over by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, who was promoted to the bench as a Supreme Court judge.
“We have to hear the amicus also, now he is not available any more. I will appoint [a] new one. Senior Advocate Maninder Singh is new Amicus Curiae,” the Court said.
The case was scheduled to be heard on July 28.
Notably, the BCCI has petitioned the Supreme Court to change its Constitution. The necessary cooling-off period between terms for office holders in State Cricket Associations and the BCCI is intended to be eliminated by the proposed revisions.
According to the Justice RM Lodha Committee’s recommendations, the Constitution stipulates that anyone who has served as an office bearer for six years in either the BCCI, a State Cricket Association, or a combination of both must wait three years before running for reelection.
Sourav Ganguly, president of the BCCI, and Jay Shah, secretary, would both have to resign from their positions as they had served in such capacities for six years. Previously, they held office in the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Gujarat Cricket Association, respectively.
To allow Ganguly and Shah to remain in office, the BCCI is asking for adjustments to the cooling-off period.
