New Delhi, Dec 20: The Supreme Court has resolved 6,844 cases, including 2,511 bail and transfer petitions, in the little more than a month since Chief Justice DY Chandrachud took office, according to sources of PTI.

From November 9, 2022, the day Justice Chandrachud assumed leadership, and on December 16, 2022, a total of 5,898 cases were filed.

In an effort to reduce the backlog of cases, Chief Justice Chandrachud ruled in a full court conference in November that all 13 benches would hear 10 transfer petitions relating to marriage conflicts and an equal number of bail requests each day.

“After a full court meeting, we have decided that each Bench will take up 10 transfer petitions, which are family matters, followed by 10 bail matters every day to dispose of all such matters before the winter vacation,” Justice Chandrachud said.

He also added that bail matters needed to be given primacy as they pertained to personal liberty.

According to the supreme court, there are 3,000 matrimonial petitions that are still ongoing and in which parties are requesting case transfers.

The entire court had stated that 13 benches would be able to reach decisions if each bench took 10 transfer cases on a daily basis “650 cases each week, or 130 cases per day. All transfer petitions will therefore be completed at the conclusion of the five weeks we have left before closing for the holiday season.” In order to ease the strain on judges who are required to view case files until late at night, Justice Chandrachud had also stated that he had chosen to reduce the number of cases that will be listed at the last minute in the supplementary list.

According to sources at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of India has also tried to simplify the listing of cases by giving bail petitions and matrimonial transfer cases priority.
