New Delhi, Aug 30: In view of the apology/ explanation tendered or justification that provided to the court, the Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed the 2009 contempt of court case against advocate Prashant Bhushan and Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal.
Before concluding the matter, a bench of Justices Indira Banerjee, Surya Kant, and MM Sundresh recorded the same.
“In view of the apologies made by the contemnors, we don’t deem it necessary to continue the matter,” the Court ordered.
This was after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Bhushan, stated,
“My only submission is in light of the apology made, is pursuing this necessary? (It will be) entering muddied waters.”
Before concluding the case, the Court accepted the same.
Notably, in 2009, Bhushan said that eight of the previous sixteen Chief Justices of India were corrupt in an interview with Tehelka magazine.
After a contempt case was filed, Bhushan’s father, Senior Counsel Shanti Bhushan, sent the Supreme Court information about the list of corrupt CJIs in a sealed cover. The 2009-started case was placed in cold storage in 2012. When a court chaired by Justice Arun Mishra decided to hear the case in 2020, it was then brought back to life. However, due to Justice Mishra’s retirement, the hearing was unable to take place. The issue was subsequently listed today.
