New Delhi, July 6: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to schedule urgently a petition calling for the arrest of Nupur Sharma, a former BJP spokesperson, for allegedly making anti-Muslim statements on television.
The case was brought up for urgent listing before a vacation bench that included Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Indira Banerjee. In front of the court, the attorney argued that despite a police complaint against her, nothing had been done about it.
The judge informed the attorney, “Why bring it up before the vacation bench? Bring it up in front of the registrar.” Following a brief hearing of arguments, the court rejected to list the matter promptly and instructed the counsel to bring it up before the registrar for listing.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and J.B. Pardiwala harshly criticised suspended BJP politician Nupur Sharma on July 1 after her comments on Prophet Muhammad created a debate. The Supreme Court declared that she is ‘obstinate and arrogant’ and that her careless statements have ignited a national inferno.
Sharma was represented by senior attorney Maninder Singh, who asked that all FIRs brought against her be transferred to Delhi. Sharma was censured by the bench, though, for making careless remarks about a religion.
